MDMA my store is now open!

Woohoo, finally enough pieces of work and sales to open up my own store MDMA which stands for Making Design Meet Art, aptly named after my life in Graphics but my love for art.

I will finally have my entire collection available with all prints documented signed and ready to be shipped out!

I will also be putting all my other pieces in there along with my pill prints, it is a bit nerve racking at first because I hope that if i keep up the momentum i’ll start making loads of sales, but we shall see, fingers crossed things pick up and soon enough every household will have a pill of its own 🙂

I would like to think i’m rather approachable and that if anyone wants to give me an offer i’m happy to reciprocate.

Juliette Clover @ Rise gallery

The other night, on Friday to be precise, Rise gallery held a private view for artist Juliette Clover who creates beautiful portraits and images through layers of hand cut vynil on black perspex.

The walls in the 2nd half of the gallery were painted matt black which gave that part of the gallery a really intimate feel. It set the tone perfectly for the evening, the show was hung and curated superbly with all aspects considered.

I caught up with Juliette later that evening and was inspired by her passion and modesty toward her artwork, after small talk of beautiful cities and travelling, she went on to explain her process and her inspiration of myth and creature that finds it’s way into her images. She first manipulates  her thresholds into several colours and then separates each layer. Stencils each layer and then uses the stencil to shape and cut out the layers from the different colours vynil. Reading that back it sounds complicated… and to be honest it actually is lol as well as time consuming.

Along with the show Juliette worked with Kevin from Rise Gallery and Master Printers to create a set of limited (Rise) edition screen prints of one of her pieces. And they were absolutely impeccable. With that amount of layers… and those colours overlayed… on top of black… if your a screen printer or do screen printing then you may understand when you see it how difficult it could be. Of course they use machines and it isn’t hand pulled. But hey still stunning.

I think somewhere in the near future there is a space on my wall for Juliette. Next to a Hush.

State of Independence Pop Up stall

Whilst mingling with the crowd in my first group show at The Depot I met Steph, a young lady from Lets Be Breif crew or LBB. Soon after I realised that the guys at OTHER were a mutual between us and there was an upcoming opportunity for OTHER to set up shop at  the pop up art fair ‘State of Independance’ in Cafe 1001 located at the bottom of Drury Lane just off Brick Lane. It was a pop event for emerging artists and other creative minds.

I couldn’t make it down but OTHER’s Ash kindly manned the station and put out a good spread of our works. From what he told me, it was quiet but where there was an audience there was great interest in what he had to offer.

I have to take this chance to say a big thanks to Euan and Ash at OTHER for all their input and their efforts in helping me get my work out there and introducing me to so many good links such as LBB’s Steph, artists Vincent,  Kraggy and so many more.

Time for a rant…
Emerging as an artist is not easy, It does make me doubt myself and my abilities when things don’t sell as much as you expect, however, the wealth isn’t the goal and i don’t wanna do this for the money solely, it’s gaining that respect or appreciation as an artist that makes it worthwhile, it would just be nice to get back what I’ve put into the work financially, only so I can continue to make more work. Regardless though, it’s always onwards and upward and I love what I do. I can feel sorry for myself and moan as much as I want but the truth of the matter is I will always continue to make work, whether people like it or not, whether they buy it or not it matters not

With all things considered I can’t wait to start tackling new designs and taking the EGO notion a step further. I feel like I need to approach the idea with fresh eyes, something that gives me the chance to work with new materials and I don’t know why but…. bigger, whatever it is I wanna make it large scale!

Going from strength to strength working with the awesome guys at OTHER they have asked me to come back to host my work in a group show with them at Vogue Fabrics Dalston for the Equinox Party. The footfall on this is going to be much greater than The Depot in Clapton and I can’t wait to get networking with like minded creatives and artists. Really couldn’t thank OTHER enough for giving me the chance to exhibit my work and helping me get my foot firmly wedged in the door.

This is giving me a great opportunity to expand on my range as well as perfect the orientation and method for printing the pill, as simple and flat as it looks, it is rather technically difficult to finish. Considering the paper stock, then paper colour, the transparency of the colour, The mesh count of the screen (bearing in mind pigment requires lower mesh count), the layers and then the registration…. yeah, it brings me great pleasure in producing just ONE perfect print haha.

I’ll also release an affordable range of coloured prints in an edition of 4/5 as opposed to just single unique editions that were in the last show at The Depot. I’m making this an affordable range so that everyone can enjoy having a pill of their very own somewhere in their house!

Disillusioned Consumer

If you are a screen printer you will understand the purpose of proofing, if you do not screen print then you will know that when trying a new colour or if you have left the screen for too long without printing anything, you will have to print onto some dud paper, otherwise known as ‘proofing’ or ‘clearing the god damn screen again’.

Well while proofing I thought it might be interesting to proof onto the same sheet overlaying each separation. Contrary to my own meticulous nature, I attempted to eratically print a different layer at different times without thinking, or even registering the layer.

It was nice and liberating to print something so spontaneously as the designer in me always thinks twice and struggles to make marks without purpose or planning.

The only rules I knew I had to stick to is that I would only use each 1 colour 3 times and that the trajectory of the image had to alternate in direction. The rest was instinctive.

This print will look great framed and is up for sale. Feel free to get in contact for any works on my blog.
